Why is reach low even if the people who like the post is high?

The phenomenon of high likes but low engagement on X (formerly Twitter) can be attributed to several factors based on general insights into social media dynamics and specific observations from users and analysts on X:
  • Algorithmic Changes: X, like many social platforms, frequently updates its algorithms. Recent discussions suggest that X might be moving towards a model similar to YouTube, where view counts and time spent on a post could be more critical than likes. This shift might prioritize different engagement metrics, potentially overshadowing or undervaluing likes in the algorithm's distribution strategy.
  • Content Quality vs. Quantity: Users have noted that the platform's push for constant engagement might favor volume over thoughtful content. This means that while a post might receive likes, the type of engagement (e.g., comments, shares) that leads to deeper interaction might be lacking if the content doesn't encourage further discussion or interaction beyond a simple like.
  • Content Nature: The type of content that gets liked might not be the same that drives other forms of engagement. For instance, aesthetic or visual posts might get high likes due to their immediate appeal but might not provoke comments or shares if they're not controversial or conversation-starting.
  • User Behavior Change: There's a noted shift in how users interact with social media. With information overload, users might engage passively (liking) rather than actively (commenting, sharing) due to time constraints or a change in how people consume content, especially if the platform's design encourages quick, low-effort interactions.
  • Platform Dynamics: X's approach to showing content might now prioritize posts to a broader, less engaged audience first (similar to TikTok's model), where initial engagement determines further visibility. If these initial viewers are not engaged beyond a like, the post might not gain traction in terms of comments or shares.
  • Engagement Metrics Reevaluation: There's a growing sentiment that likes might not reflect true engagement or community interaction as effectively as other metrics like comments, shares, or even profile visits. If the platform is reevaluating what constitutes valuable engagement, a high like count might not hold the same weight in the algorithm or in user perception.
  • Community and Content Shift: If X is seeing more clickbait, AI-generated content, or content aimed at virality rather than substance, this could lead to a disconnect where likes are easy to garner but meaningful engagement (like discussions) might decrease.
  • External Sharing: There's been mention of changes where sharing content outside of X might now hold more value. If users are not encouraged or incentivized by the platform's design to engage within X but rather share content elsewhere, this could skew engagement metrics.
  • General Engagement Fatigue: Social media fatigue might play a role, where users are less inclined to engage deeply with content due to saturation or other platforms offering different engagement experiences.
